Visual research.
By looking at this image I would say this has been shot with a digital camera using a tripod. The quality is clear and crisp thought I would have to admit i’m not too fond of the composition. I think it seems that the subject is oddly contained in a black box and looks quite awkward. The lighting seems to be coming from the front left judging by the shadows on her body. If I was to re-create this image i’d try to make the whole theme of the image less awkward to look at and think about different compositions. I wouldn’t say this image has influenced me although I can tell the theme is a sort of pin up style which is one of my favourites.
There are so many advantages to studio photography opposed to location. On location, you will find that the weather is never consistent and does what it wants to do. You control the weather in the studio (okay, not weather but lighting definitely). In the studio, you can controleverything. The lighting, the main focus of the image. You can never control who might walk past on location. It’s not the easiest thing to have the whole park -for example- to yourself. The main thing is you are in control over every aspect. Images are also a lot easier to edit. Instead of perhaps obscuring the shape of a building, there is hardly any background to worry about.
On location you may need many different people to carry equipment. Of course in the studio, depending on the nature of the shoot you need very little people is anyone else at all.
❤Studio Photography has many advantages and is my personal favourite space to conduct my work. To create a studio to work in it’s essential you have somewhere with a lot of space. With all the equipment needed it isn’t practical or safe to be working in cramped conditions. Make sure there is enough space for the camera equipment, the backdrop and the various lighting you will be using. The obvious pieces of equipment would be your camera, a tripod and a backdrop. Backdrops come in different colours and sizes so depending on what job you are doing and what you have in mind, it might be a good idea to have several rolls of paper in storage for back up or an idea that pops up and you need right away. Another vital thing is numerous electrical outlets. A lot of the equipment needed is all electricity based but try not to depend on extension leads to prevent accidents and fires.
It would also be handy to purchase reflectors. These come in different shapes, colours and sizes. A flash meter would also be required.
Various different genres of photography can be shot in a studio. These include:
• Portraiture
• Fashion
• Still life
• Advertising
• Hair
• Beauty
• Band
• Stock
• Pet
